Course Description
The Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Mechanical Engineering is a Level 4 Higher Technical Qualification (HTQ) designed to equip you with the skills, knowledge and practical experience needed to work as a technician or engineer in the mechanical and manufacturing sectors. Delivered by Lakes College West Cumbria in partnership with Pearson BTEC, the programme blends academic study with hands-on learning to develop real-world engineering competence. You’ll study a range of essential topics such as Engineering Design, Engineering Mathematics, Mechanical Principles, Thermodynamics and Fluids, Production Engineering, Quality and Process Improvement, and Project Management. This course can be studied full-time over one year or part-time over two years, making it suitable for both school leavers and those already working in industry who wish to upskill. What next?
On successful completion of the HNC, students can progress to the HND Mechanical Engineering (Level 5) at Lakes College. Graduates may also continue to university-level study in engineering or related subjects, or move directly into industry roles such as Mechanical Design Engineer, Maintenance Technician, Production Engineer, or Manufacturing Supervisor. The qualification meets the academic requirements for Engineering Council registration at Engineering Technician (EngTech) level.
