Foundation Degree Civil Engineering and Asset Management
Course Description
The Foundation Degree (FdEng) in Civil Engineering and Asset Management is a Level 5 qualification awarded by the University of Cumbria and delivered at Lakes College West Cumbria. This part-time programme is designed for those already working in, or looking to enter, the civil engineering, construction, or infrastructure sectors. It provides the technical knowledge, analytical skills and work-based experience needed for a successful career in civil engineering and asset management. You’ll study subjects such as Construction Science and Materials, Structural Analysis and Design, Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics, Geotechnics and Soil Mechanics, Environment and Sustainability, and complete an Industrial-Based Project. The course is delivered on a day-release basis over three years (six 15-week semesters), combining academic learning with practical, real-world experience through work-based modules and projects. Entry requirements
Applicants should normally have one of the following: The equivalent of two A-Levels at Grade D or above (48 UCAS points) in a science and/or maths-related subject. An OCR Level 3 Certificate, Foundation Diploma or Extended Diploma in a relevant subject, achieved at Pass grade or higher. A minimum of five GCSEs, including Maths and English at Grade C/4 or above. Mature learners with relevant industry experience are encouraged to apply and will be considered on an individual basis. All applicants will attend an interview to assess suitability and discuss career aspirations. Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) may be available for relevant qualifications or experience.

What next?
Graduates can progress directly onto the BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering and Asset Management top-up degree, completing the pathway toward Incorporated Engineer (IEng) professional registration. The qualification also supports career progression into roles such as Civil Engineering Technician, Structural or Design Technician, Asset Manager, or Construction Project Supervisor. This programme is recognised by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and provides “further learning required status” towards IEng accreditation.
