Course Description
The Foundation Degree in Nuclear Science, Operations and Technology has been designed to develop the next generation of technicians, engineers and scientists ready to support the UK’s vital nuclear industry. Developed in partnership with the University of Cumbria and delivered by Lakes College within the state-of-the-art National College for Nuclear – Northern Hub, this course combines cutting-edge theoretical learning with extensive hands-on experience. You’ll gain the specialist knowledge and practical skills needed to work safely and effectively in areas such as nuclear operations, decommissioning, waste management, and plant engineering.
Throughout the course, you’ll explore a range of technical and scientific disciplines including mathematics, engineering science, thermodynamics, radiological safety, and nuclear plant operations. Teaching is delivered through interactive lectures, laboratory sessions, and innovative virtual reality simulations, providing a real-world insight into complex nuclear environments. You’ll also undertake work-based modules and an industrial project, applying your learning to authentic scenarios drawn from across the nuclear sector.
Experiential learning sits at the heart of this programme. You’ll “learn by doing” through practical activities, problem-solving tasks, and project work designed in collaboration with industry partners. Our expert teaching team brings extensive experience from nuclear and engineering settings, supported by visiting professionals who share current industry practice and case studies. This approach ensures you develop not only technical competence, but also the professional behaviours, communication skills and reflective practices valued by employers.
By the end of the course, you’ll be equipped with the knowledge, confidence and professional awareness to contribute to the safe and sustainable operation of nuclear facilities. Graduates from this programme play a key role in addressing national and global challenges around energy generation, waste management and decommissioning, making this an excellent route into one of the UK’s most secure and rewarding career sectors. Entry requirements
Applicants should normally have achieved the equivalent of 48 UCAS points, such as two A Levels at grade D or above in science and/or mathematics, or an OCR Level 3 Certificate, Foundation Diploma or Extended Diploma at Pass grade (or an equivalent qualification).You will also need five GCSEs at grade C/4 or above, including English and mathematics, or equivalent qualifications. Mature applicants with relevant industry experience are welcome to apply and will be considered on an individual basis.All candidates will be invited to attend an interview to assess suitability for the programme. Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) may be available for those with relevant previous study or experience.

What next?
On successful completion of the Foundation Degree, you can progress directly onto the BEng (Hons) Nuclear Plant, Operations and Technology to gain a full honours degree and work towards Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status through professional institutions such as the IET or the Institute of Measurement and Control. Alternatively, graduates may choose to enter employment in roles such as Nuclear Operations Technician, Decommissioning Technician, Nuclear Plant Technician, or Operational Management positions across the nuclear and energy sectors.The qualification provides a strong foundation for a sustainable and rewarding career supporting the UK’s nuclear future..
