Foundation Degree Electrical Power Systems and Distribution
Course Description
The Foundation Degree in Electrical Power Systems and Infrastructure at Lakes College is designed to equip students with the technical expertise and practical experience needed to thrive in the nuclear and electrical engineering sectors. Delivered in partnership with the University of Cumbria, this part-time, three-year programme blends academic learning with immersive, hands-on training in state-of-the-art facilities, including a virtual reality suite and project/technology centre at the National College for Nuclear – Northern Hub.Students will explore core topics such as electrical machines, control systems, instrumentation, and transmission and distribution, while gaining a deep understanding of the nuclear industry's operational and safety standards. The curriculum is built around experiential learning, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios through work-based modules and an industrial project. This approach fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, and the development of work-ready behaviours essential for high-risk environments..Throughout the course, learners will benefit from expert teaching staff with extensive industry experience, including guest lectures from nuclear professionals and engineers. The programme also integrates business and management principles, preparing students to contribute effectively to multidisciplinary teams and complex engineering projects within the nuclear sector and beyond. Whether you're already employed in a relevant role or seeking to enter the industry, this course offers a unique opportunity to build a strong foundation in electrical power systems and infrastructure. Entry requirements
Applicants should have the equivalent of two A2 Levels at Grade D (48 UCAS points) in a science and/or maths-related subject, or an OCR Level 3 Certificate, Foundation Diploma, or Extended Diploma at Pass grade.Five GCSEs including English and Mathematics at Grade C or above are also required. Mature applicants with relevant experience are encouraged to apply. All candidates will be interviewed to assess suitability, and accreditation of prior learning or direct entry into later stages of the programme may be considered.

What next?
Graduates of this programme will be well-prepared for roles such as Electrical Power Technician, Infrastructure Maintenance Technician, or Power Systems Engineer. The course provides the 'further learning required status' for progression toward IEng registration, which can be achieved through a top-up honours degree.
