A VERY special birthday was celebrated at Lakes College as Margaret Quinn marked her 100th Birthday with a surprise pamper day organised by students and staff.

Margaret, who spent most of her life living on Queen Street in Whitehaven and now resides at Bethany House, Whitehaven, visited the college for a memorable day of celebrations organised by multiple college departments.

During her visit, Margaret was treated to a manicure by a Level 3 Beauty student and enjoyed having her hair styled by the college’s Hair department. Learners and staff also gathered to sing Happy Birthday, creating a heartwarming moment for the new centenarian.

The celebrations were a true college-wide effort. The Catering department baked a birthday cake especially for Margaret, while Level 1 Art and Design students created a colourful birthday banner for the occasion.

Alana Brown-Telfer, activities coordinator at Bethany House, attended the college with Margaret and praised the surprise celebration.

She said: “It’s amazing what the college has done for Margaret – it was so thoughtful, and we really didn’t expect it. Everyone was so kind, and Margaret has had a great time.”

When asked about the secret to reaching 100, Margaret had a simple answer: buying clothes and enjoying the occasional whiskey and lemonade.

Emma-Rose Teasdale, junior business engagement officer at Lakes College who organised the event, said the day was a powerful example of the college coming together.

“Watching each department contribute and seeing colleagues, students and employers come together was truly special. Seeing the day unfold honestly brought tears to my eyes – it was a beautiful reminder of what can happen when we work together.”

The celebration highlighted the strong community spirit at Lakes College, with staff and students working together to ensure Margaret’s milestone birthday was marked in a truly memorable way.
