GCSE success at Lakes College

Celebrations have taken place at Lakes College as students pick up their GCSE maths and English results.  

For many, this marks the start of a new chapter, with learners now preparing to further their studies, whether that be progressing onto the next level of their course or moving into apprenticeships or employment. 

It was a double celebration for Clyde Pashley, who passed his driving test the day before picking up a grade 4 in English.  

The Level 2 catering study will now start his Level 3 in September, and said: “I am so pleased with this – second time’s a charm!” 

Finn Robinson studied Level 2 welding at the college and will now start a career in robotics at AtkinsRéalis after achieving a grade 4 in maths.  

“I am really happy with my result and can’t wait to start the next chapter.” 

The college has once again achieved strong pass rates. Many students had not achieved grade 4 in English or maths at school, and alongside their main course at Lakes College continued to study these subjects before sitting their GCSE exams again this summer. 

The college had success stories including students who had jumped two grades higher in just one year.  

Ruby Percival achieved a grade 3 at school in her English GCSE and is delighted with her grade 5.  

“I am so happy with my result,” said Ruby, who is studying T Level Early Years at college. “I am so shocked as I was not expecting to jump two grades from school. I am going into my second year of the T Level course in September, then I want to work in a nursery.” 

Johnny Ivison, who has completed his Level 2 mechanical engineering course, has picked up a grade 4 in his English GCSE. He is pleased that this result means he can now start his apprenticeship in September with Sellafield Ltd.

A highlight of results day is the 15 students who passed their GCSEs having not previously sat them at a school before starting college.  

One of those is Peter Thompson, who achieved a grade 5 in both English and maths after being homeschooled.  

He said: “I did expect to pass both exams as I had been taught the knowledge and had good teachers. I’m really pleased with my results and will now start a Level 3 graphic design course at the college after completing Level 2,” he said. 

Celebrations have also taken place for 335 learners who have achieved their Level 2 qualification in their college course. There has been a 100 per cent pass rate in a wide range of subjects including engineering, construction, uniformed public services, early years, catering, bricklaying and carpentry.
