College shop learns from retail expert

STUDENTS at Lakes College received an insight into the retail industry when the manager of a national chain visited to speak to learners who run the college shop.

Home Bargains store manager Richard Jackson spoke to the pre-supported intern learners who are working hard to raise the profile of the in-house shop.

His visit included a tour of the college’s Learning Company model used in the Foundation Learning area to support the development of employability skills for learners with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

Mr Jackson shared his expertise on retail operations, covering the history of Home Bargains and the skills employers look for in interviews, giving the learners valuable knowledge to help them in their future careers.

He praised the students’ enthusiasm for the industry, saying: “I found it enjoyable, and it’s great that the students want to come into retail. It’s a great industry to work in, and they’re very passionate and keen.”

Susmita Wahiduzzaman, pre-supported internship learner reflected on the experience, saying: “I’ve learnt about how the manager takes care of his shop and makes sure that everyone’s on task, and what they look out for in the interview process. I now have a better understanding of Home Bargains after speaking to Richard.”

The student-ran shop opened its doors in September 2024, allowing learners to develop their employability and independent living skills.

Samantha Scott, learning support assistant for Foundation Learning said: “It was a wonderful opportunity for the learners to meet Richard.

“They enjoyed showing him the Learning Companies that we have in the Foundation Learning area and enjoyed learning about Home Bargains and the various job roles there.

“We would like to thank Richard for taking the time to come into college and talking to us.”
