The T Level in Design, Surveying and Planning is an excellent starting point for a career in the construction and civil engineering industry. It can lead to roles such as civil engineer, land surveyor, designer, quantity surveyor, project manager, and more. This course follows the design, surveying and planning pathway, covering core areas including health and safety, construction technology, construction maths and science, commercial business, project management, and design. You’ll gain practical experience in designing buildings both by hand and using AutoCAD, surveying land and creating drawings from your surveys, and planning projects from research through to implementation, including understanding quantity surveying requirements.

The programme combines classroom learning, practical sessions, and a substantial industry placement of at least 315 hours over the course. This gives you real workplace experience and prepares you for higher apprenticeships or employment.The T Level is equivalent to three A Levels and has outstanding outcomes for learners progressing into higher apprenticeships, offering a strong foundation for further study or a professional career in construction and civil engineering.

Entry requirements

To study this course you require at least five GCSEs at Grade 4 or above including maths and English.

Costs

This course is free for students aged 16 or over but under 19 on 31 August 2026.

What next?

After completing a T Level you could go on to an apprenticeship, higher apprenticeship, Higher Education and/or degree apprenticeship, or have the skills to enter full-time employment.This could be with Lakes College based on the existing (and growing) offer, or to another provider.
