STUDENTS from Lakes College came together for an inspiring charity event – cycling the equivalent distance from Lakes College to Dunkirk on spinning bikes.

The event brought learners together from a range of different areas, all working together to raise funds for the Royal British Legion and to pay tribute to those who served.

Catering students baked and sold poppy-themed biscuits, beauty students offered creative nail art in exchange for donations, and art students crafted handmade paper poppies to mark the occasion. Meanwhile, learners from the Cumbria Institute of Sport kept the wheels turning with energy and enthusiasm, boosting both the mileage and their cardiovascular fitness.

The event was planned and delivered by Level 3 Sport students as part of their Organising a Sports Event unit. The project allowed them to apply a wide range of skills, from event planning and promotion to teamwork and leadership.

Evie Crompton, a second-year Level 3 Sport student reflected on the experience, saying: “The event has allowed me to put my leadership skills into practice. We worked as a team to plan and organise the day, and we’re pleased that it ran smoothly and was such a success.”

Lecturer and Course Leader Holly Scowcroft said: “The students have used their skills to calculate the maths involved, publicise the event, and ensure its smooth running. There has been such a positive atmosphere throughout the day, with respect, resilience, and wellbeing at the forefront.”

Vice Principal Iain Glendinning said: “Remembrance Day holds a deep meaning for me. My grandfather fought in the Second World War, and I along with many of my close family members, have had the honour of serving in the armed forces myself.

“The story of Dunkirk reminds us of resilience, unity, and sacrifice – values that continue to inspire our college community today. Through this event, we are paying tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our futures and ensure their legacy lives on.”
