LAKES College staff and students were celebrated with unsung heroes from across Cumbria’s education community at the 2022 Golden Apples – and brought home one of the prestigious awards.

The ceremony, which recognises success in schools and colleges across the county, was held at Energus at Lillyhall on Thursday, October 13.

The college had five finalists, with principal Chris Nattress shortlisted in the Best Education and Learning Leader category, while the Best Teaching Professional category saw lecturers John Crook and Sarah Graham both shortlisted.

Students Millie Lawler and Saeed Al Hamam were shortlisted in the Best Student and Against All Odds categories respectively.

Maths lecturer Sarah Graham had been nominated by her students, who said she had ‘changed our lives’, and took home the Best Teaching Professional award.

Sarah collected her award onstage and urged anyone thinking of becoming a teacher to ‘never give up’ on their dream.

Chris Nattress and Mike Priestley, chair of governors, also presented awards onstage in the Best Industry Engagement and Best Teaching Assistant categories.
