Apprentice Case Study: Amy Irving

Amy Irving studied her Level 3 Customer Service apprenticeship with Copeland District Council via Lakes College, and completed her qualification in August 2020.

We asked her a few questions about her experience as an apprentice…

What made you choose an apprenticeship with Lakes College?

I wanted to understand more about the Customer Service profession and increase my own skills. The long term objective for me was to be able to be considered for promotional opportunities, and also contribute to the provision of good customer service within Copeland Council.

What did you love about your apprenticeship?

The programme relates directly to the skills needed for my job, and is therefore very relevant and a practical way to learn. Support is provided and fits in with the requirements of your work, and because you’re employed, you have work expectations to fulfill. Having flexible one-to-one support makes it possible to complete the programme.

What would you say to somebody who is considering doing an apprenticeship?

Has studying an apprenticeship with us helped you in terms of employability and learning skills on the job?

It has. I have achieved my level 2 Maths and English, as well as my level 3 qualification – this led to a recent promotion within my organisation!

What support did you receive during your apprenticeship?

I was given flexible one-to-one support from the workplace which helped with my diploma. I also received maths and English support from my assessor in the workplace, and was given support through classes in college.
