Learning Resource Centre

Welcome to the College's fantastic Learning Resource Centre (LRC). The centre has been designed to bring together a range of learning facilities in an attractive, purpose built environment, which is the biggest of its kind within the region. Well designed furniture and a modern layout provide an attractive and functional study environment with spectacular views of the fells.

Within the LRC you'll find a well stocked library, over 100 networked computer workstations, 185 study spaces, and experienced staff to help you find what you need.

Resources

The centre has a stock of books, DVDs and expanding e-resources. We also subscribe to over 100 periodicals including magazines and newspapers. The book stock includes encyclopaedias, atlases, dictionaries, trade directories, law reports, Acts of Parliament, British Standards, careers books and pamphlets, as well as a wide range of books on specific subjects.

Online Catalogue

Our computerised catalogue is easy to use and will allow you to find books by a specific author and on particular subjects.

Information and Requests

Our experienced staff are here to help you find the books and information that you need. Any items that are not available immediately may be reserved for you.

Computers

We have over 100 online computers available providing access to the Internet, e-mail, Microsoft office packages and software resources for specific courses.

To gain access present your LCWC ID card at the LRC helpdesk, where your personal account will be activated. The LRC staff will be able to help you with any problems relating to computer access.

Print Allocation

All students receive an initial allocation of £6.00, which equates to 200 A4 sheets of paper. Extra credits can be purchased at the LRC helpdesk for 3p per sheet, in units of £1, £2 etc.

Study Space

For personal study periods we have 185 study spaces in an attractive modern environment. In addition to these we have a quiet study room.

Stationery

Many items of stationery are available from the LRC helpdesk, please ask if you require any of these. A price list is available in the LRC.

Photocopying and associated services

A photocopier, laminator and ring-binding machine are available for your use, and are situated beside the LRC counter. The photocopier requires a two-pound card, which entitles you to eighty A4 copies. Comb binders, laminates and plastic covers can be purchased at the LRC counter along with photocopying cards. If you require help with any of the machines please ask one of the LRC staff.

Book Purchase Scheme

If you wish to purchase a book, you may do so through the LRC. All we require from you are the full details of the book and a deposit of five pounds. We offer a ten percent discount off the retail price.

DVD Collection

We now have a substantial collection of DVDs (both recreational and educational) available for students to borrow. The cost is £1.50 for a three day loan, and students must sign an agreement to comply with the LRC DVD policy.

VALNOW (Virtual Academic Libraries of the North West)

VALNOW is part of the University of Central Lancashire and provides a service for all Higher Education students doing Foundation Degrees through Lakes College. LRC FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Q: How many books can I borrow and for how long?

A: You are allowed 6 books at any one time usually for two weeks. (Books that are in heavy demand may only be borrowed for one week.)

Q: What if I haven't finished with the book when it is due back?

A: As long as no one else has reserved it you can ask to have it re-stamped for a further one or two weeks. You can do this by either bringing the book to the LRC, by phoning us on 01946 83 93 12 and quoting your LRC ID number and your name, or by e-mailing us on This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. (again making sure you tell us your LRC ID number and name).

Q: What happens if I am late returning my books?

A: We will charge you a small fine for every day that the book is late (excluding days that the LRC is not open and college holidays). Even if your book is late back, it is still worth calling to renew it - we will then stop the fine at the sum already owed.

Q: What can I do if I can't find the books that I need?

A: If the books are in stock but on loan to another student you can reserve them using the online catalogue - ask a member of the LRC team to show you how to do this. If the books are not in stock you can put in a request and we will try to obtain them for you by either borrowing them from another library or buying a copy for stock.

Q: Is it easy to find the books and information I'm looking for in the LRC?

A: Not always! We have grouped together the resources appropriate to particular groups of courses e.g. Health & Care courses, Sport courses. You should receive an induction visit to the LRC with the rest of your class at the beginning of your course but don't forget - if you get stuck, the staff are here to help. Just ask!
