Lakes College Art Student’s Open End of Year Exhibition

Arts students of Lakes College have opened the end of year art exhibition, ‘Wake Me Up Before You Van Gogh Gogh,’ to the public. The students opened the event in the Lakes College Construction Skills Centre on Tuesday 28th June, when they held a preview night where family and friends could support the artists. The exhibition was open to the wider public from the 29-30th June. The exhibition is an annual event at the college to showcase students’ work throughout the year.

Art students across all levels and all disciplines have showcased their creations to the public. Art forms were vast and covered a large spectrum: photography, fashion, game design, projection and installation are to name a few. The exhibition is part of the students’ work experience and contributes towards their grades.

Preview night was a huge success and we enjoyed showing everyone all our hard work,’ said Georgia White, 18, from Whitehaven.

Lakes College aims to create platforms for student’s to express themselves in a safe environment. The students were not given a specific brief to follow and were given complete control over their work.

Twins, Olivia and Jessica Bowness, 17, from Maryport, said, “It was great that we were given creative control and freedom over our work. We got to express who we are.’

Daniel Johnson, 22, from Workington, HND Fine Art student comments, ‘The main thing that stood out was the quality of the artwork, expertly crafted and professionally displayed work showing the variety that the college has to offer. I saw how much attention the exhibition drew in, from both the older and newer generations to enjoy. The energy was ecstatic and the students interacted with the visitors showing their passion for their work. It was really an amazing evening and environment to be in.”

Lakes College principal, Chris Nattress, comments, “I had the pleasure of officially opening out annual Art Show last night. The show somehow gets better each year. The students not only created the wonderful art, photography, fashion, design and digital work on display, but have also planned and curated the show themselves. They have done an excellent job. This event showcases what a very talented group of students we have.”
