Golden Apples Winners!
This year we were shortlisted for 3 awards at the CN Golden Apple Awards, the Cumbrian Education Oscars!
Darren Kilvington for Against All Odds:
Darren started his life over from scratch in September 2014, and hasn’t looked back since. He was daunted by the prospect of learning new things that other students take for granted, such as using a computer for the first time. Over the course of the academic year, Darren has become a different person and is highly praised by his tutors for his commitment to his education and the standard of work he produces.
Jamie Lee Robinson for Apprentice of the Year
Jamie Robinson started his education at College on a Level 1 Welding course in 2010. During his Level 2 I gained an Apprenticeship with Tata, which gave him the chance to develop his practical skills and knowledge outside of college. With the support of his tutors and his employers he recently competed in the national final of WorldSkills where he won a silver medal for his work. He is also a 2015 WorldSkills finalist, for the second year in a row.
Graduates Restaurant for Enterprise of the Year
Since Graduates opened it has been the training ground for almost 1000 full time students and almost 1000 apprentices. In that time the restaurant has delivered over 28, 000 meals and has also delivered celebrity masterclasses to the public, from household names such as Jean-Christophe Novelli and Simon Rogan. Graduates is very much a considered enterprise, balancing training for students, with keeping customers happy and working with local suppliers to deliver locally sourced food, where possible.
Graduates “graduates” advance on to the kitchens of famous hotels and restaurants such as; L’enclume, Carluccios, and Fat Duck to name but a few. Last year 100% of students went onto higher education here at college, two students went onto university and the rest gained employment in industry, proving that Graduates is an effective training ground for student progression.
We congratulate all nominees and are delighted to announce that both Graduates and Jamie Lee Robinson took home their Golden Apple. Well Done!
