Cumbria Sports Games Collaborative Event

The annual Cumbria Sports Games took place at Cumbria Sports Academy (Copeland Stadium) on Wednesday 12th May, with Lakes College being named as overall winners. The collaborative event brought together students from Lakes College, Carlisle College, Kendal College, Newton Rigg and Furness College to participate in a series of athletics events.

The event was organised by Mark Banks, Sports Maker at Lakes College, along with Alison Hastie from the Association of Colleges (North West).  The students took part in the shot put, long jump, discus, high jump, 100m, 200m & 800m running, plus the 4 x 100m relay to celebrate the lead up to the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Mark Banks comments, “It’s really fantastic to see students from all areas competing and being active, and we were especially fortunate to have such great weather on the day! All the students were really enthusiastic and thoroughly enjoyed the day. I’m obviously really happy to see our team win, however all teams put in a fantastic effort and worked incredibly hard. We were also very appreciative to have the support of Seaton Athletics club who helped in making the event run so smoothly.

The event was organised to enhance and develop sports and physical activity opportunities in both further & higher education in Cumbria, developing opportunities and sharing good practice for the students and making links with the community to make them aware of the sporting opportunities for young people.
