Fast Facts

The apprenticeship is a programme of vocational education and training whereby you will develop your skills whilst learning on the job, building up your knowledge and experience, gaining qualifications and earning money all at the same time.

The programme includes the AAT level 3 Diploma in Accounting which comprises seven mandatory units. The apprentice will also undertake functional skills in Mathematics and English at level two, together with a technical certificate, which provides underpinning knowledge for the Diploma in Accounting.

Entry Requirements

The Apprenticeship is suitable for those wishing to pursue a career in accounting, and would typically suit those candidates currently working or looking to work in the following areas:

  • Trainee Accounting Technician
  • Assistant Accountant

For the Level 3 Apprenticeship in Accounting, previous accounting experience is necessary, as the financial accounting modules assume a good prior knowledge of double entry book keeping. Completion of the level 2 certificate in Accounting or relevant work experience in financial accounting is recommended as an entry requirement. Applicants must like working with numbers and be able to demonstrate good communication skills.

What Next?

Completion of the Advanced Apprenticeship will allow you to progress onto the Higher Apprenticeship, where you can complete the next stage of the AAT suite of qualifications leading to full AAT qualification status.

Alternatively, you may wish to further your career options in Accounting and Finance, as the Level 3 Diploma provides some exemptions from Chartered Accounting examinations. For example, the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS) and Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA).
